Using games to change how people think about civic life.

I am Bismark Wiafe Bimpong, a doctoral candidate in Educational Research and Evaluation at Ohio University. This site is my learning portfolio for a seminar on the foundations, theory, and research of digital game-based learning. It holds my reading reflections, my digital adventures with new tools, the courses behind my program, and the thread that ties the seminar to the civic-technology work I am already building.

Purpose of this site

Why this portfolio exists

A graduate seminar can disappear into a learning management system the moment grades post. This portfolio keeps the work in the open instead. Each week I read the assigned literature on games and learning, try a piece of instructional hardware or software, and write about what I noticed, what I struggled with, and where it could go in a classroom or a research study.

The seminar asks a bigger question too: how do emerging technologies actually change teaching and learning? I come to that question as a builder. I designed and released CivicQuest Ghana, a browser-based civic-education game, and I lead CivicConnect Ghana, a civic-technology platform. This semester I want the readings and the building to inform each other, and I want the result to help me prepare for my comprehensive examinations.

So the pages here are meant to be read, not filed. If you are on a hiring committee, a research team, or just curious, everything is one click away.
